Cunard's 175th Birthday

Well, what a weekend I've just had.  I was in Liverpool as a guest at the service to celebrate the Cunard shipping line's 175th birthday.  Yes, 175 years ago on Saturday (4 July) the first Cunard ship set sail from Liverpool to Canada and the USA.  Well, Queen Mary 2 set off to recreate the voyage so is currently en route for Halifax, NS.

I had a front row seat at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral for the special concert featuring the Liverpool Philharmonic and choir, the cathedral choir and guest soloists.  Plus the Welsh Guards, former Corrie stars Thelma Barlow and Roy Barraclough (of course they filmed on the old QE2), Carol Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher's daughter), former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, Lord David Steel, news presenters Jennie Bond and Michael Buerk, veteran of the Falklands war Simon Weston, plus descendants of Arthur Rostron (Captain of the Carpathia which rescued hundreds from the Titanic) and of Sir Samuel Cunard himself. It was a very moving two hour show - which I saw twice!

Then it was on board the QM2, my favourite Cunard ship, for a special dinner - before being kicked off before she set sail sadly!

A great treat.
